Home Made Laundry Soap Recipe

I've had a number of readers ask if I would re post the laundry soap recipe. Since posting it the first time, I've made it myself and have been using it now for about 2 months. No problems. I am thinking of adding some sort of fragrance to it but haven't come up with any great ideas yet. If you have some, let us know.

We gave a recipe for laundry soap last week. I'll include it here, again. Chyra found the ingredients for us and sent the prices in. I've since heard of a couple people who have used this for awhile and have found it to be a good alternative to the expensive soap. Give it a try.

"I went to WinCo last night and found the ingredients for the laundry soap. They were all located in the laundry aisle. Figured I'd send the information in case anyone else was wondering where to find it, prices and such."

Washing Soda- $2.92 (3lb, 7oz box)
Fels-Naptha- $1.12 (5.5oz bar)
Borax- $3.09 (4lb, 12oz box)

Wow! Total of $7.13 and you only use a portion of this for a batch! I believe it says it makes a 5 gallon pail full! Can't compare that to any price I've ever seen in town!

Thanks, Chyra!
*TIPS FOR LAUNDRY SOAP:* We use Fels-Naptha bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, but you can use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk's Hardwater Castile or Zote bars. Don't use heavily perfumed soaps. We buy Fels-Naptha by the case from our local grocer or online. Washing Soda and Borax can normally be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2.

*Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value*

4 Cups hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

  1. Adding some store bought detergent to the homemade adds scent. Just mix in a bottle (or however much you like) to the batch of homemade.

  2. I make 1/4 of this recipe at a time and it lasts me 3-4 months for my family of four. If I made the whole batch it would last me a year! I love that it only costs me $2 for a whole year of laundry soap!! :)
